About Ella Maryska

Every day, the same. Mind racing, hands flying, body moving through the process of living. But I wasn't along for the ride. Where were the brakes?

After trying numerous methods, I stumbled across breathwork. It was the first time I could finally slow down, to come home to my body and mind.

The breath is with us our entire lives, why don't we learn how to work with it?

I'm a certified breathwork facilitator with over 230 hours training, with experience in both corporate and community settings, trained in trauma-informed care and mutli-modal breathing practices to create safe, deeply supportive spaces for healing and awakening.

These sessions are informed by science, and guided by you and your unique story.

What is Breathwork?

Breathwork is a conscious, intentional practice of using the breath to access deeper states of awareness, release stored emotion, and restore balance to the nervous system. Rooted in ancient traditions across cultures β€” from yogic pranayama to Indigenous healing ceremonies β€” it has been used for thousands of years as a gateway to expanded awareness and healing. In a session, you are guided through a specific breathing pattern while supported by music, presence, and a carefully held space β€” an experience that can range from deeply relaxing to profoundly cathartic.

Breathwork is for anyone who wants to slow down and feel fully alive. Are you feeling the call?

Stories of Coming Home

I had no idea what to expect from breathwork, but after one session I felt more at peace in my body than I have in years. Something just shifted. I felt held and completely safe the whole time.

β€” Sarah M., Melbourne

I've done years of therapy and this single breath journey went places I'd never been able to access before. It was like my body finally exhaled something it had been holding for decades.

β€” James T., Sydney

The group ceremony was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. There's something about breathing in community that cracks you open in the most beautiful way. I'll return again and again.

β€” Lia R., Byron Bay

The Science
of Breathwork

Explore the research, physiology, and evidence behind the transformative power of conscious breathing practices.

Breathwork & the Nervous System

The nervous system is the body's master regulator, governing everything from our stress response to our capacity for rest, connection, and healing. Breathwork is one of the most direct and powerful tools we have for shifting the state of the nervous system, because the breath is the only autonomic function we can consciously control.

When we experience stress, trauma, or threat, the sympathetic nervous system activates, often called the "fight or flight" response. The heart rate quickens, muscles tighten, and the mind narrows its focus to survival. For many people, this state has become chronic, leaving the body stuck in a loop of alertness and dysregulation even in the absence of actual danger.

Conscious breathwork directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system - the "rest and digest" branch through the stimulation of the vagus nerve. Slow, deep, rhythmic breathing signals to the brain that it is safe to soften, to open, and to heal. Heart rate variability improves, cortisol drops, and the body begins to access the states of restoration it has been craving.

Over time and with regular practice, breathwork helps to build what is known as vagal tone, the resilience and flexibility of the nervous system's ability to move between activation and rest. This is the physiological foundation of emotional regulation, trauma recovery, and lasting wellbeing.

Research & Studies

The scientific study of breathwork has grown significantly over the past two decades, with research now supporting what ancient traditions have known for centuries, that conscious breathing is a profound vehicle for physiological and psychological change.

A landmark 2023 study published in Cell Reports Medicine compared cyclic sighing, box breathing, and mindfulness meditation across five weeks. The breathwork groups showed significantly greater reductions in anxiety and negative affect, and greater improvements in positive emotion and sleep quality than the meditation-only group, suggesting that active breath control may outperform passive awareness practices for emotional regulation (Balban et al., 2023).

A 2018 randomised controlled trial found that heart rate, blood pressure and perceived stress all dropped after 12 weeks of slow breathing exercises (Naik et al., 2018).

Published in the renowned Springer Nature: Current Psychology Journal, scientists found that breathwork reduced anger, tension and confusion whilst increased esteem. Brain frequencies also changed, with gamma brainwaves increasing in experienced practitioners, linked to higher IQ and better concentration (Camile Bahi et al., 2023).

The Physiology of the Breath

Every breath you take is a cascade of physiological events: a combination of chemistry, pressure, and electrical signals that governs your state of mind and body more profoundly than almost any other process.

Breathing regulates the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a low oxygen level but a rising carbon dioxide level that triggers the urge to breathe. Carbon dioxide plays a critical role in the Bohr Effect, the mechanism by which oxygen is released from haemoglobin into the tissues. This is why slower, fuller breathing often delivers more oxygen to the cells, not less.

During certain breathwork practices, deliberate hyperventilation temporarily reduces carbon dioxide, creating a shift in blood pH and triggering a range of physiological responses including: altered sensation, emotional release, and expanded states of awareness.

The diaphragm (the primary muscle of breathing) is intimately connected to the vagus nerve, the psoas muscle, and the pericardium surrounding the heart. When we breathe fully and freely, we are not only oxygenating the blood; we are massaging the heart, stimulating the digestive organs, and creating coherence throughout the entire body.

Trauma, the Body, & Healing

Trauma is not what happened to you, it is what happened inside you as a result. When an experience overwhelms the nervous system's capacity to process and integrate, the unresolved energy of that moment becomes stored in the body: in the muscles, the fascia, the breath patterns, and the posture we carry through life.

Breathwork offers a bottom-up approach, working directly with the body and nervous system to create the safety, regulation, and discharge that allows trauma to move. Somatic breathwork practices help the body complete the defensive responses it was unable to finish at the time of the overwhelm, allowing held tension to release and the nervous system to reset (Van Der Kolk, 2015).

All breathwork sessions at Coming Home are held within a trauma-informed framework. This means working at a pace that honours your nervous system, respecting your boundaries by creating the conditions of safety and trust that make genuine healing possible.
